Part 2 : BMC’s Home Isolation Guidelines for the Caregiver

Here are the BMC’s guidelines for the Caregiver. 

  1. The caregiver must download the AAROGYA SETU APP And it Should Be Active at all times. 

  • Ensure Home Isolation Rules For COVID Positive Patients Are Being Followed 

  • Assign one person who is in good health and has no comorbidities as a caregiver. 

  • Limit movement of the patient to the assigned room and do not occupy other rooms in the house. 

  • No one must share a room with the COVID+ patient. 

  • No visitors in the house until complete patient recovery. 

  1. Wear Mask  

  • Ideally Caregivers must wear masks at all times but especially when they are in the COVID patient’s room. 

  • Wear a triple layer medical mask / N95 mask appropriately (covering both mouth, nose and well fitted to the face). 

  • Do not touch the front, but instead, untie it from behind. 

  • Don’t touch the mask during use. 

  • Change masks daily

  • Do not reuse masks 

  • Change immediately if the mask gets wet or dirty with secretion. 

  • Discard mask after 8 hr use or when they become wet or visibly soiled. But before throwing the mask first you must disinfect it by soaking it in an antiseptic water solution for 15 mins. 

  1. REGULAR HAND WASHING & SANITIZATION

WHEN TO WASH HANDS?

Ideally, every 2 hours. 

  • Caregivers must wash hands immediately after contact with the patient or patient’s immediate environment. 

  • Before & after preparing food. 

  • Before & after eating

  • After using the toilet 

  • Hands must be washed whenever hands look dirty

  • Avoid touching your face, nose, or mouth as far as possible without washing hands. 

One must wash their hands for at least 40 seconds and then use a hand sanitizer. The sanitiser must have more than 60% alcohol. 

  1. FOLLOW THESE RULES WHILE BEING WITH THE PATIENT 

  • Use of PPEs (triple-layered medical mask, gloves, plastic apron) while handling the patient. 

  • Clean hands before & after taking off gloves or handling any items used by a patient. 

  •  Provide food to patient in their room  

  • While handling a patient's masks, utensils, dishes, gloves, drinks, used towels, bed linen, etc. make sure you have worn PPE Kit. There should be no direct contact with the items. 

  • Use PPEs while cleaning or handling surfaces, clothing, utensils or linen used by the patient. 

  • Patient’s laundry to be washed separately using regular laundry soap and water with common household detergent and dry thoroughly in the sun. 

  • Segregate all masks, tissues, or other disposable items used by the patient in a closed dustbin and pack separately in a bag for disposal only after disinfecting it with dettol for 15 mins. 

  1. MONITOR HEALTH STATUS OF OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS 

  • Do health checks thrice a day or every 8 hourly. 

  • In case caregivers start experiencing COVID symptoms, please get the Covid test done immediately. 

  • Special care to be taken for family members with Diabetes, Hypertension, COPD, Asthma, Heart / Kidney / Lung diseases / Liver disease and elderly / pregnant women since they are at high risk of contracting the disease. 

  • Ensure that all other family members who are COVID negative, shall remain in home quarantine and not leave the house. 

  1. IF TRAVELING TO SEEK EMERGENCY CARE FOR PATIENT 

  • Wear a medical mask 

  • Maintain social distancing

  • Avoid public transport / autos / cabs (call an ambulance or use a private vehicle). 

  • Carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer 

  • Inform the medical centre beforehand about your visit and share the COVID report.
