Tuvalu Minister Gives Speech Knee-Deep in the Ocean
Tuvalu's foreign minister has given a speech to the United Nations climate conference in Glasgow standing knee-deep in seawater.
The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, is being held in Glasgow, Scotland from 31 October to 12 November 2021. This is the 26th United Nations Climate Change conference. The COP26 summit is being held to discuss the problem of climate change and how countries can control pollution to protect the environment. Many countries who participated in the meeting promised to make changes in their factories to reduce pollution. Even PM Modi promised to help the world battle climate change. Tuvalu is a small island country in the Pacific Ocean. Its foreign minister Simon Kofe had given a speech to the COP26 summit. However he did not go to Glasgow but gave the speech from Tuvalu itself through video conferencing. However, people were shocked to see him!
Simon Kofe wore a suit and tie. He was standing at the lectern set up in the sea, with his trouser legs rolled up. People were shocked to see him give a speech like that. Images of him went viral on social media. The reason he gave the speech like this was because he wanted to draw the world’s attention to the rising water levels in Tuvalu. Because of the earth’s rising temperature due to pollution, glaciers are melting which is why water levels across the world are rising. But Tuvalu is in more danger because it is a very small island. If the water levels continue to rise there can be dangerous floods, tsunamis, etc and lives of people will be at risk. Simon Kofe requested world leaders to reduce pollution because like Tuvalu there are many other islands which are in danger.
