The World Associations of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI) conference was held in Paris, France. Interpreters from all over the world attended this conference. WASLI was set up in 2003. After years of discussions and collected funds, their first conference was held in 2005. An ISH News representative attended the conference and interviewed the experts present.

Gourav Verma an interpreter from India and a delegate from ISLIA was present at the conference as well. Mr. Verma was in awe of the professionalism displayed. He believes that India is still far behind and that associations must conduct workshops and meetings to bring India at par with International organisations. He encouraged interpreters from Asia and India to participate and present lectures at the next conference.

ISH News was delighted to interview Ex-President of WASLI Debra Russell. She observed that the number of Deaf interpreters in the world is continuously increasing. The presentations held at the conference has helped everyone learn and better their professional interpreting skills.

We had the honour of interviewing the current President of WASLI Christopher Stone. He has some very big plans for the organisation. They are planning to expand their offices in Geneva, Switzerland. This is so that they can contact officials of the United Nations and conduct discussions. He has urged Deaf and Hearing interpreters to stay united and work for the advancement of the Deaf community.
