Why Indian Govt Banned 25 OTT Platforms Like ULLU and ALTT
The Indian government has banned 25 OTT platforms, including ULLU and ALTT, for showing vulgar content and breaking content rules under the IT Act.
On 25th July 2025, the Indian Government made a big decision — it banned 25 OTT platforms across the country. This move was taken to stop vulgar and unregulated content on the internet.
The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) said these platforms were breaking content rules under the IT Act, 2000. This law says platforms must avoid obscene content, show age ratings, and give safety warnings. But many of these apps continued to show sexually explicit content without any warnings.
Popular apps like ALTT (earlier ALTBalaji), ULLU, Desiflix, and Prime Play are on the banned list. These platforms were being used mostly in small towns and cities where big OTTs like Netflix and Amazon Prime are not so common.
The government had already given many warnings to these platforms earlier this year. They were asked to self-regulate and remove adult content, but most of them did not follow the rules. So, after many chances and months of no action, the government finally ordered internet companies like Jio, Airtel, and BSNL to block access to these OTT platforms and their websites.
This decision came after discussions between different ministries — like Home Affairs, Women & Child Development, Electronics & IT, and Legal Affairs. Industry experts and digital rights groups also gave their opinions.
Ekta Kapoor, founder of ALTT, said she and her mother had already stepped down from the platform in 2021 and are no longer connected to it.
Some political leaders, like MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, supported the ban. They said it was important to protect Indian youth and cultural values.
The government also said that if other OTT platforms do not follow the rules, they could be banned too in the future.
