On Tuesday 30th June, the health department officials said that it is possible that a wedding has set off the biggest infection chain in Bihar. There was a wedding ceremony in rural Patna a fortnight ago where the groom was having high fever. He died two days after his wedding. His body was cremated without being tested for COVID-19. The officials requested anonymity and said the groom was a software engineer working in Gurugram and had returned home in the last week of May for his marriage.

A few days after the ‘tilak’ ceremony, he started showing symptoms of the coronavirus. The wedding was on 15th June and on that day the bridegroom was having high fever and wanted the ceremony to be postponed. But he agreed when his family members insisted and made him swallow paracetamol tablets and continue the rituals. On 17th June, his health deteriorated and family members rushed to AIIMS, Patna, but he died on the way. The body was cremated in a hurry and the authorities were not informed. But somebody telephoned the district magistrate and narrated the whole incidence.

The officials said that all the close relatives who attended the ceremony were tested on 19th June. 15 tested positive and maybe infected others. The officials added that to control the spread of the disease, a special camp was set up from 24th to 26th June at the village where the marriage took place. In the camp samples of 364 people were collected. Of them, 86 tested positive. Parts of Paliganj have been sealed for sanitization. The sudden rise in the number of dangerous coronavirus has triggered panic in the area. Most of the ones who tested positive were asymptomatic but they have been admitted to isolation centres in Bihta and Phulwari Sharif in Patna District.
