12 Policeman Get Life For Murder Of Convict
12 policemen were sentenced to life imprisonment for the torture and murder of a convict in Punjab.
Bikramjit Singh was serving a jail sentence in Amritsar for the shooting and murder of 6 people including Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) member Gurdial Singh in 2002. While in jail, Bikramjit started using drugs and became an addict. The police wanted to know who was supplying him the drugs.
On May 5th, 2014 he was taken to a local hospital for treatment. There he was kidnapped by a police team lead by Gulshanbir Singh and taken to tractor workshop in Batala, Punjab. He was brutally tortured to get the information of the person supplying him drugs. The stress of the torture led to his death. His body was then dumped in a nearby canal. Police initially registered a case against him saying he ran away from the hospital and died on his own. His brother Dalbir Singh filed a complaint saying the police are to blame and did this to him. A Special Investigation Team was constituted and they exposed the truth.
In total 10 Policemen were arrested and 2 others. The other two were a police informant and the owner of the tractor workshop where Bikramjit was tortured. All the men recived life in prison murder, kidnapping, wrongful confinement and criminal conspiracy.
