In what can be termed one of the most horrifying events, a 12-year-old girl was tortured and killed by her 30-year-old brother over suspicion in Ulhasnagar, Thane district earlier this week. The young girl had just begun menstruating and had period stains on her clothes. Her brother accused her of having an “affair”. There are two main basic dysfunctionalities to this. A girl, who had lost her mother, was living with her brother and sister-in-law in Ulhasnagar, Thane. According to the police officials, the girl was about to have her first menstruation. However, she had no clue about it. When her elder brother noticed blood stains on her clothes, he questioned her and asked if she was physically involved with someone. She denied. The girl had no idea about menstruation so when her brother asked her about it, she could not explain.
He burned her delicate skin, leaving her with burn wounds that covered her mouth, back, and other parts of her body. The torture continued for four days, during which the girl suffered in silence. It wasn’t until the girl’s condition had deteriorated to a critical level that she was taken to Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar. But it was too late. She was declared ‘dead before being brought to the hospital.’
Her brother, a 30 year old man who was a security guard by profession, killed his little sister for having periods? Or for suspecting that she could have been physical with someone? Killed her?!! As shocking as it may sound, police sources have revealed that this gruesome incident was nothing more than a grave misunderstanding. A case of murder has been registered against the brother.
The 30-year-old, married man never thought her sister could be menstruating. Wow!! Also, premarital sex, or being physical with someone is deemed a social crime which might have been another reason the brother didn't hesitate a bit while torturing the 12-year-old for 4 days till she died !! While today there is a lot of debate around menstrual and sexual awareness, we have all failed at removing the shame around these two topics and now that has led to death ! What a world we live in!
