13 Civilians Killed by Indian Army in Nagaland

There are many terrorist groups in North East India demanding more rights from the Indian government. Some groups are also demanding independence from the Indian government. On 4th December 2021, members of the Assam Rifles were in Oting village in Mon district, Nagaland. There were there because they recieved a tip that terrorists might be in the area. A truck carrying 30 or more coal-mine labourers was passing the Assam Rifles camp area in Oting village. The army thought they were terrorists and open fired on the truck killing 8 people. After the news of firing spread in the village, hundreds of tribal people surrounded the army. They burned Assam Rifles vehicles and clashed with the soldiers using crude weapons.
Members of the Assam Rifles retaliated, and opened fire. 5 more civilians and a security member were among those killed. A soldier died and 3 vehicles were also set on fire. Protests erupted across Nagaland. Around 500 people attacked the Assam Rifles headquarters in Mon District. 2 people died in these attacks. Section 144 was imposed in the Mon district to prevent gathering of people and the internet was also suspended. Nagaland’s chief minister Neiphiu Rio said, “The unfortunate incident leading to the killing of civilians at Oting is highly condemnable and the situation in the entire Mon district is very tense right now. A probe will be conducted and punishment meted out to guilty parties in the incident.’ Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his condolences to the families of the dead and said that a high level investigation will be conducted.
