17 Killed In Lightning Strike in Bangladesh

At least 17 people, including five members of the same family, were killed in a lightning strike on the bank of Padma river in Bangladesh.

On 4th August, at 12pm near the bank of Padma river in Bangladesh's Chapainawabganj district 40 wedding guests from the groom's side had taken shelter under a tin shed to avoid rain. They were waiting for the rains to stop so they could take a boat to the bride’s place. Unfortunately there was a lightning strike. People below the tin shed got electrocuted. 17 were killed. Among the 17 deceased, 12 were men and five were women. 15 were injured. The dead bodies were recovered and brought to Sadar Upazila Health Complex. The injured had been admitted there as well. Lightning kills hundreds of people every year in Bangladesh. In 2016 more than 200 people died in the month of May alone, including 82 people on a single day. Experts say the rise in fatal lightning strikes is related to deforestation. Many tall trees which would have been drawn by the lightning strikes are being cut; this is why there are many accidents like this.
