26 Dead As Bus Catches Fire On Maharashtra Expressway

In a very shocking incident the bus caught fire on an expressway in Maharashtra. The private bus was travelling from Yavatmal to Pune. The accident occurred on 1st July between 1.30 am and 2am on the Samruddhi - Mahamarg Expressway in Buldhana district, Maharashtra. A total of 33 people were travelling on the bus. According to the driver, the bus hit the pole after a tyre burst, and then overturned causing fire in the diesel tank.  The police said that the bus overturned on the side of the doors, blocking it, because of which nobody could get out.  25 people were burnt to death in the accident including 3 children. 8 people were injured including the driver.  The injured are being shifted to Buldhana Civil Hospital. One person later succumbed to his injuries. Out of 33 people, 26 people died and 7 people sustained injuries. Sunil Kadasane, Superintendent of Police (SP), Buldhana said a case has been registered and investigation is on. The priority at this moment is to identify the bodies and hand them over to their family members.” 

As soon as the information about the accident came, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the accident site with Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The chief minister has also ordered an inquiry into the incident. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has expressed his condolences over the horrific accident and announced a compensation of ? 5 lakh each for families of those who died. The Chief Minister also directed to provide immediate medical treatment to the injured at government expense.” PM Narendra Modi expressed grief over the bus accident in Buldhana. “My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives. May the injured recover soon. He announced an Rs. 2 lakh ex-gratia for the kin of the deceased. Rs 50,000 would be given to the injured.  Union home minister Amit Shah too expressed in twitter grief over the loss of lives in the accident. My prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives in this horrific accident. Quick treatment is being provided to the injured by the administration. I pray to God for their speedy recovery," 

As most of the victims were charred beyond recognition after the bus caught fire in the early hours of July 1, efforts were made to convince their families for mass cremation of the bodies instead of their DNA analysis, the official said. The DNA testing is a lengthy procedure which may take days to ascertain the identity of the deceased, as per sources.
