31 March 2019, Last Date to Link PAN Card and Aadhar Card
Government threatens to cancel PAN cards if citizens fail to link it with Aadhar card.
Supreme Court has made it mandatory to link PAN card to Aadhar card to file Income Tax Returns it from 1 April 2019. The Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes [CBDT] said that, out of the total 42 crore PAN card holders, only 29 crore people have linked their PAN card to their Aadhar card. He said that if people do not link their PAN, their cards will be cancelled.
The Finance Minister Piyush Goyal in his Budget speech said that total number of people who filed Income Tax returns was 6.85 crore. This comprises of only 16% of the total number of PAN cards.
The remaining have neither filed Income Tax Returns nor have they, linked their PAN cards with their Aadhar cards. The last date to link PAN cards with the Aadhar card is 31 March 2019.
