On 20 April 2023 at 3:00pm soldiers from the Rashtriya Rifles Unit were traveling in a vehicle. They were going from Bhimber Gali to Sangiot. This is in Jammu Kashmir’s Poonch District. The incident took place on a highway in the Bata-Doriya Area. They were deployed in the area for counter-terrorism operations. Suddenly terrorists fired at the army vehicle. Terrorists fired upon an Army vehicle taking advantage of the heavy rain and low visibility in the area. The vehicle immediately caught fire, likely due to the use of grenades in the attack. Following the grenade attack, the firing was carried out from three sides and the fuel tank caught fire. Eye witnesses say that the vehicle was completely covered in flames. This was a very well planned attack. Five soldiers were killed in the attack. The terrorists had managed to flee the spot and changed their locations. One Army personnel was injured and was evacuated immediately to the Army Hospital in Rajouri where he is being treated for his injuries.
Senior officials are rushing to Poonch to investigate the matter. Now a massive operation has been launched in the Bata-Doria area and the army is looking for the terrorists.
Officials suspect the involvement of four terrorists. The area has been cordoned off and drones and sniffer dogs are being used to trace the terrorists. The army has launched a massive search operation in the dense forests of the Bata-Doriya area. A Bomb Disposal Squad and Special Operations Group (SOG) are also at the site to probe the attack. Officials said that a high alert has been sounded in the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch amid close vigil along the Line of Control. Traffic on the highway was stopped after the incident. Jaish-e-Mohammed -backed terror group, People's Anti-Fascist Front (PAFF), has claimed responsibility for the attack. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted after the attack and expressed his anguish. “Anguished by the tragedy in Poonch District (J&K), where the Indian Army has lost its brave soldiers after a truck caught fire. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the bereaved families.” His tweet came minutes before the Army said the soldiers were killed in a terror strike. The troops on the ground are keeping a watch on the situation and taking appropriate action.
