50% Indians Likely to Have COVID-19 by February
As per a Central government committee, 50 % of Indians may be infected by coronavirus by February next year.
The Central Government set up a committee to provide projections for COVID-19 infections in the future. The committee consists of virologists, scientists and other experts. They have conducted research using a unique mathematical model. The committee prepared a report which was released on 18th October. According to the report, Till now, India reported 7.55 million cases of the coronavirus and is second only to the United States. Manindra Agrawal, a professor at the Indian Institute for Technology (IIT), Kanpur and a committee member said, “As per our calculations around 30% of the population is currently infected and it could go up to 50% by February.”
Mr Agrawal said “We have conducted our research and done the calculations in a different way. The committee studied reported COVID cases as well as unreported COVID cases.The committee has warned that if the government and citizens do not take proper precautions, then a lot more people can get infected. They have also warned that the infections could rise as celebrations for the festivals of Durga Puja and Diwali will take place due this month and in mid-November respectively.
