The West Nile Fever, caused by the West Nile Virus (WNV), is a disease, which is spread to humans from animals who feed on blood, like mosquitoes.The symptoms are high fever, headaches, body aches, swollen lymph glands and skin rash. When the virus enters the brain it becomes life-threatening.Prevention is the best and only cure for this disease.
On 18th March in Kerala a 7-year-old boy from Malappuram,Kerala died due to the WNV.His name was Mohamad Shan. He was going through treatment at the Kozhikode Medical College. High Alert has been issued in Kerala. This is the first case registered in India. KK Shailaja Kerala's Health Minister, has assured that they are in constant touch with the Union Health Ministry and are following the protocol of the World Health Organization (WHO).
She has even said that if treated early, WNV can be cured, so if there is fever or other symptoms, one has to seek medical help at the earliest.The Kerala government working hard to spread awareness regarding this disease. They have even carried out several initiatives to control mosquitoes in the state.
WNV's first case was detected in Uganda's West Nile district in 1937. WNV has occurred in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and North America. Last year in the U.S. thousands of cases were reported.
