78 MPs Suspended From Parliament In A Day
More than 90 BJP opposing MPs have been suspended from the parliament for disrupting proceedings and causing uproar in Parliament over the recent security breach incident.
18th December 2023 was the 11th day of the 2023 winter session of the parliament. On this day the parliament saw the largest mass suspension ever when it suspended 78 MPs. 33 of these MPs belonged to Lok Sabha and 45 to Rajya Sabha. They were suspended for disrupting proceedings and causing uproar in Parliament over the 13th December 2023’s security breach incident. All of these MPs are Congress members or its allies. According to the reports, the opposition MPs staged a protest while demanding a clear & thorough statement from Home Minister Amit Shah by launching an all out protest against the BJP party. The suspended Lok Sabha MPs included Congress leaders Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, T R Baalu and Sougata Ray. They were suspended for displaying placards and chanting slogans like ‘BJP jawaab do, sadan se bhagna band karo’ and ‘We want justice’. Some even demanded his immediate resignation. Parliamentary Affairs Minister - Mr. Prahlad Joshi moved the motion for suspension of the opposing MPs in Lok Sabha. It was adopted by voice voting. But the opposition’s protest still continued and Lok Sabha had to be adjourned for the day. A similar process was carried out in Rajya Sabha too. Rajya Sabha MPs included Congress's Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala and KC Venugopal. They too were suspended for causing similar disruption during the ongoing session. Out of these 78, 64 MPs have been suspended till 22nd December 2023 i.e. for the full remaining winter session while the other 14 are suspended pending the Privileges Committee report. The panel has been asked to submit a report within 3 months. Till then the MPs will remain suspended. Rajya Sabha leader, Mr. Piyush Goyal said that Congress and its allies ‘insulted’ the Lok Sabha speaker and Rajya Sabha chairperson with their conduct. Last week too, 13 Lok Sabha MPs and 1 Rajya Sabha MP were suspended for raising slogans and causing disruptions. With last week and 18th December’s mass suspension, the total number of suspended MPs is now 92. Congress and its allies have slammed all the allegations and suspensions. They also mentioned that no action has been taken so far against BJP MP Prathap Simha who is accused of providing the passes to parliament intruders.
