A 85 year old covid patient vacated his bed in order to save the life of a 40 year old patient.
India is facing a health crisis now and has been reporting lakhs of new cases and hundreds of deaths daily for the past few weeks. There are several reports of shortage of hospital beds, Oxygen cylinders, medicines etc. During this health crisis an 85 year old man has shown courage and sacrifice.
Narayan Dabhalkar an 85 year old man was an employee of the Maharashtra government and an active member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and contracted Covid-19. When his oxygen levels dipped, he was taken to the Indira Gandhi Government Hospital in Nagpur on April 22. After great effort his daughter and son-in-law were able to arrange for a bed. It was then that he saw a woman looking for a bed to save her 40-year-old COVID-infected husband. The hospital authorities refused to admit him because there were no empty beds. Dabhalkar decided to vacate his bed for her husband. While giving up his bed, he reportedly said, "I am 85. I have lived my life. Saving the life of a young man is more important. Please give my bed to them." The hospital administration asked him for a statement in writing. Despite dipping oxygen levels, Dabhalkar went against the medical advice of the doctors and opted for a discharge. The octogenarian then called his daughter and told her about the situation. According to the daughter, they had got the bed after a lot of efforts but then Dabhalkar had said he would prefer to spend his last moments with the family and he also informed them about the young patient. Dabhalkar was brought home and three days later, he died at his home. After the news about Dabhalkar's act of sacrifice went viral many people praised him. Mr. Dabhalkar has died, but his act will remain immortal.
However after the news went viral, there were some news reports that said that the incidence never happened and the story was fake.
The doctor in charge at hospital said that Mr. Dabhalkar was admitted on 22nd April and the relatives were told that he will have to be moved to a higher hospital if his condition deteriorates. They agreed and returned after sometime and sought his discharge. The hospital doesn't know the reason and said the news of vacating the bed is fake.
Upset with the news of the story being fake, Mr. Dabhalkar’s daughter released a video clearing the doubts. In the video she said that her father was being treated at the hospital and his condition was worsening. While being treated, he heard the chaos of people looking for a bed. That is when he decided to vacate his bed saying he has already lived a full life.
