Actor-Politician Raj Babbar Punished in a 26 Year Old Case
An MP/MLA court in Uttar Pradesh has ruled a two-year jail sentence to Bollywood actor and Congress leader Raj Babbar in a case involving the assault of a polling officer.
During the 1996 Lok Sabha elections Raj Babbar was in the Samajwadi Party and was contesting the elections from Lucknow. During the time of the elections, a verbal argument had broken out between the actor and the polling officer which led to the assault. A police complaint was filed against Raj Babbar and his associate Arvind Yadav. The FIR was lodged in Wazirganj police station on May 2, 1996 by the polling officer. You all know how slow the Indian judiciary is. All this happened in 1996. Since then the case has been going on. However since Raj Babbar was a former Member of the Rajya Sabha, this case was not held in a normal court. It was held in a special court in which there are only cases about MP & MLAs. This is because there are many cases against MP MLA and since they hold important government positions, the Supreme Court of India set up special courts so cases can be resolved quickly and MP MLA won’t misuse their position. Even Raj Babbar’s case was held in a special MP/MLA court in Uttar Pradesh. The court has ruled that Babbar will have to go to jail for 2 years and he has to pay a fine of Rs 6,500.
