Railway concessions, which had been withdrawn in March 2020, as Covid-19 hit India, will be brought back over two years later. The concession will start from July 1, 2022.
Indian Railways gives concessions to senior citizens, persons with disabilities, students etc. For example - Men above the age of 60 are given 40% concession and women above 58 years of age are given 50% concession. Deaf people and their escorts were given 50% concession in 2nd class, 1st Class and Sleeper Class. Similarly all different categories have different concession rates in different classes. All together there are 53 categories.
This list also includes concessions for unemployed youths, who are going for job interviews for central govt, state govt, municipal corporation, government undertaking, university etc jobs. The concessions will now include awardees like recipients of the President's medal, National awardee teachers, one of the parents accompanying the child recipients of National Bravery award etc. The list of concessions will now also have war widows. The others on the list include kisans etc who are attending conferences, tours, camps, etc – like annual conferences of certain All India bodies.
In March 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic began and lockdowns were implemented, Indian railways had announced that all the concessions given to people for travelling on trains have been withdrawn. This was done because according to Indian railways they did not want people to undertake non-essential journeys. Also because senior citizens were the most vulnerable to coronavirus, this step was taken to discourage them from travelling during the covid time.
