Alabama Passes Law on Abortion Ban

The Alabama State Senate in the USA has passed a new law that puts a near total ban on abortions in the state. The law has banned abortions even in cases of rape and inscest.

Alabama a state in USA has passed a new law that puts a near total ban on abortions in the state with only exemptions for cases where there is a risk to the mother or if the unborn child is sick. Even in cases of rape and incest, abortion would not be allowed. The Democratic Party tried to change this law, but they were rejected by the Republican party. The goal of passing the law is to go to the Supreme Court and overturn the abortion plan that is in the USA.

The law was passed 25-6 in a vote in the Alabama State Senate and was sent to the Governor Kay Ivey. She is part of the Republican party. She signed the bill into law. The bill will take effect in 6 months but many lawmakers who support abortion have said they will fight the case in court before it becomes law in hope to overturn it. This law will have very high punishments for the doctors or people who carry out the abortion up to 99 years in jail, but the women will not be aressted or taken to court. Many groups that do not support the law have said they will take a few weeks to put together a case against the new law and hope to overturn it before it comes into effect in 6 months.

Republican Senator Clyde Chambliss said that there is a “window” of time where it is still legal to perform an abortion and he believed it was 7 to 10 days. Mr. Chambliss said “She has to take a pregnancy test, she has to do something to know she is pregnant”. Many women have said that they cannot know for certain if they are pregnant for up to 6 weeks which the earliest a heartbeat can be detected. Several other states have already passed similar bills which are being called Heartbeat Bills which effectively ban abortion.

In Ireland, Savita Halappanavar a dentist, died in 2012 at age 31 from septicemia — an infection she contracted after she was denied an abortion during a miscarriage. This set off outrage across the country and led to a change in their abortion laws. In Northern Ireland however, abortion is illegal. In India the law says abortion can be done until 20 weeks of pregnancy but in a exceptional case the court may allow after 20 weeks.
