Arvind Kejriwal Tears Copies of Farm Bills
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on 17th December tore copies of the contentious farm laws in a special Assembly session in support of the farmers protest.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday 17th December tore copies of the farm laws in a special Assembly session. Kejriwal also urged the Centre "not to become worse than Britishers." Thousands of farmers are camping at Delhi's borders demanding a complete rollback of the laws. On 17th December 2020, the Supreme Court allowed the farmers to protest but told them that they can not block roads that access Delhi. A 65-year-old priest of a Gurdwara from Haryana, Baba Ram Singh had joined the farmers' protest at Kundli at the Delhi-Sonipat border on 15th December evening. On 16th December he shot himself and died by suicide. The note he left behind read, "I feel the pain of farmers fighting to ensure their rights. I share their pain because the government is not doing justice to them. To inflict injustice is a sin, but it is also a sin to tolerate injustice. To support farmers, some have returned their awards to the government. I have decided to sacrifice myself.”Baba Ram Singh’s followers said that the funeral will be held in Karnal on 18th December.
Most opposition leaders including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Badals tweeted condolences. A farmer leader from Maharashtra, Rishipal, said one farmer has died every day on an average since the protest started and more than 20 of the protesters have died. He added,"A Homage Day for all the farmers who lost their lives in the ongoing protest will be organised across the country in villages and tehsil on 20th December from 11 am to 1 pm.”
