Barbie Announces First-Ever 'Diwali Doll' Ahead of the Festival

Mattel launched its first ‘Diwali Barbie Doll,’ designed by Anita Dongre, to celebrate Diwali, priced at ?1,999.

Barbie dolls are popular worldwide, and now there's something special for Diwali! On 4th October 2024, Mattel launched its first-ever limited edition ‘Diwali Barbie Doll’ to celebrate the festival of lights, especially in India.

Barbie was created by American businesswoman Ruth Handler and has been a beloved toy for 65 years, sold in various styles, professions, and themes. Over 1 billion Barbie dolls have been sold, making it Mattel's most profitable toy.

The Diwali Barbie Doll features Indian skin tones and black tied hair. She wears a stunning “Moonlight Bloom” outfit designed by Indian fashion designer Anita Dongre. The outfit includes a floral Koti vest, cropped choli, and lehenga skirt with designs of dahlias, jasmine, and Indian lotus flowers, representing strength and beauty. To add to the festive look, the doll is accessorized with sparkling golden earrings, bangles, and heels, reflecting the lights of Diwali.

Mattel said the Diwali Barbie Doll shows their commitment to celebrating heritage. Anita Dongre, who designed the doll, shared that she didn’t have a Barbie as a child due to its unavailability in India. This made the experience of designing her own Barbie even more special. She spent over a year and created 8-10 prototypes to ensure the doll resonates with girls worldwide.

The Diwali Barbie Doll is available for ?1,999 at major toy shops in India and on e-commerce platforms like Amazon. The doll comes in a beautifully designed box, matching the color of her outfit, with Dongre's signature motifs.
