Demanding the complete withdrawal of the 3 contentious farm bills, farmers have called for a nationwide shutdown on 8th December.
Currently, farmers are protesting the 3 farm bills that were passed by the government. Till now there have been 5 meetings between the farmer’s representatives and the government. The farmers had made a 39-point presentation on the inadequacies of the laws. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting at his house on 5th December. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar were present at the meeting. At the meeting, Modi and his Ministers discussed the possibility of amending the three farm laws. But the government is firm that laws will not be repealed.
But farmers have refused any amendments and have demanded that the laws be completely withdrawn. Farmers have called for a nationwide shutdown on 8th December and threatened to block all roads leading to Delhi. The farmers have already cut off major entrances to the national capital. Several political parties, including the Congress, AAP, DMK, Shiv Sena, Kamal Haasan’s MNM, are supporting the farmers Bharat Band. The All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC)— an association that represents 10 million truckers—has called a strike from December 8. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also threatened a nationwide stir. The farmers will be meeting the government for another meeting on 9th December.
