10 central trade unions have decided to go on a strike or Bharat bandh on Wednesday 8th January 2020.
The unions said on Monday 6th January that nearly 25 crore people from across the nation are expected to participate in the strike to protest against the government's "anti-worker, anti-people, anti-national" policies.
In November, the Central Government proposed the Labour Code on Industrial Relations Bill, 2019, This Bill merges 44 labor laws into four categories. The Bill seeks derecognize labor unions and make it easier for employees to be fired and many other changes.The Trade Unions are not happy with these changes and have proposed 14 demands. They have demanded to increase minimum wage to Rs. 21,000-Rs. 24,000 per month.
The unions also want the removal of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR). The Unions have said that they completely support the students who are protesting in India. Union Labour Minister Santosh Gangwar had held a meeting with the trade unions on January 2. The Unions have said that the Ministry failed to assure them that the reforms are meant for labor welfare. This is why they decided to go on strike. The Indian Banks' Association will also join the strike. The State Bank of India has assured that they will continue working.
However, banking services such as ATMs and branch services, may not be working. Banks are going on strike to protest against bank mergers and bank reforms, and demand wage hike.The Shiv Sena in Maharashtra and the MDMK & DMK in Tamil Nadu have decided to support the strike.
Student associations are protesting the hike in fees and commercialisation of education. Farmers will be going on strike as well.
