Bharat Bandh 2021: Traffic Jams at Gurugram-Delhi Border

The 'Bharat Bandh' today called by farmer unions have caused major traffic snarls in the country. Watch our latest video for more details.

3 farm laws were passed by the Indian government in September 2020. Farmers were extremely unhappy with the laws and started protesting. According to them the laws would reduce their income and cause more suffering to the farmers who are already struggling to sell their grains. However, the government assured the farmers that the laws were made to benefit the farmers and increase their income. Since the laws were passed, the farmers and the government have had 11 meetings but no solution was found. Despite modifications suggested by the government, the farmers refused and have demanded that the 3 laws be removed. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), in which many farmers' unions are working together, had called a Bharat Bandh on 27 Sept 2021 to mark the first anniversary of the passing of the three farm laws. The bandh was from 6 am to 4 pm during which all government and private offices, educational and other institutions, shops, industries and commercial establishments as well as public events and functions will be closed throughout the country. Many farmers were protesting on various highways and places which caused massive traffic jams at Gurugram-Delhi border, Noida, Haryana & Punjab. The reason for the traffic jams was because police had to divert traffic as the farmers blocked the highways. Punjab was the worst hit due to the Bandh. Comparatively in other states very few followed the bandh. Life in cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, Surat, etc was very normal.
