Bihar’s Biggest Political Feud: The Lalu Yadav Family

Bihar’s powerful Yadav family is caught in a major internal feud involving siblings. The fight threatens the unity of the RJD and could change the state’s political future

Lalu Prasad Yadav, one of Bihar’s most famous political leaders, built the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) with a strong base of caste empowerment and social justice. For years, his family of nine children seven daughters and two sons  was seen as a united political force. But today, these nine siblings are at the centre of Bihar’s biggest political and personal feud.

Lalu’s daughters include Misa Bharti, a Rajya Sabha MP; Rohini Acharya, who donated a kidney to Lalu; Chanda, Ragini, Hema, Anushka “Dhannu” Rao and Raj Laxmi, most of whom stay away from politics. His sons are Tej Pratap, known for unpredictable behaviour and public fights, and Tejashwi, former Deputy CM and the party’s main leader.

The family crisis began with Tej Pratap’s extramarital affair, emotional outbursts, and fights with RJD leaders. Lalu later expelled him from the party and from the family. The second major conflict came when Rohini accused Tejashwi of insulting her and blaming her for the RJD’s 2025 election defeat. She said she was abused, accused of seeking money and a Lok Sabha ticket, and forced out of the Patna home. She also blamed Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Yadav and Rameez Nemat Khan for creating divisions.

The feud grew when three daughters Ragini, Chanda, and Raj Laxmi reportedly left the Patna home. The media now calls it a “pari-war”.

This matters because the Yadav family controls the RJD. If the family breaks, the party may weaken, raising big questions about Bihar’s political future.
