BJP Blames Sonia Gandhi Family of Fraud
The Union Home Ministry has set up a committee to investigate the allegations of money laundering against the trusts set up by the Gandhi family.
The Union Home Ministry has set up a committee to coordinate investigations into allegations against Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF), Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust (RGCT) and Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust (IGMT) of violating the legal provisions (breaking the rules of) of Money Laundering Act, Income Tax Act and Foreign Contribution Act. A Home Ministry spokesperson confirmed the news and said that the Special Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) will head the committee. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will also be part of the committee.

Gandhi and P Chidambaram are trustees of RGF. It was set up in June 1991. Sonia Gandhi is the chairperson of RGF and Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust (RGCT). She is also looking after the work of Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust (IGMT). In a series of tweets, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief J P Nadda made many accusations against the Congress and the Gandhi Family. In his Tweets he said, The Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) donated money to RGF. But the Gandhi family’s hunger for wealth hurt the nation,” Nadda has also accused the Congress of committing a brazen fraud by diverting public money into their “family run foundation” Nadda also posted images of lists of donors to RGF for the years 2007-2008 and 2005-2006 as proof. The BJP also said that Congress had received funds from China to conduct research that would lead to India’s loss.
Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had said the RGF pushed for a free trade agreement between India and China, which benefited China.
In its response, the Congress said the BJP was engaging in diversionary tactics. Congress questioned the BJP about its visits and exchanges between the BJP and the Communist Party of China (CPC) in the past decade. Congress also alleged that there were border issues with China but still Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a “strange bonhomie” with China. PMNRF resources are utilized primarily to give relief to families of those killed in natural calamities, and to victims of major accidents and riots.
