The Assistant Dean of Sion Hospital was arrested on 23rd December for allegedly taking a bribe of rupees 50 lakh from an MBBS graduate for granting her admission to MD Paediatrics course.
The Assistant Dean of Lokmanya Tilak General Hospital popularly known as Sion Hospital was arrested on 23rd December for allegedly taking a bribe of rupees 50 lakh from an MBBS graduate for granting her admission to MD Paediatrics course.
The MMBS doctor realized that even after taking the money, the accused did not give any seat to her and she understood that she was duped so she approached the police and filed a case of cheating against the assistant Dean.
According to the police report, the 28-year-old MBBS female doctor came in touch with a man in August who claimed that he could help her in getting admission for a post-graduation course from the Government quota and also that seats were available in Sion hospital. Since the doctor wanted to pursue her post- graduation in the MD Paediatrics at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical college, she agreed to his proposal. The duo then visited the Assistant Dean at Sion hospital who explained the whole admission procedure to them and they submitted the relevant documents and confirmed that the admission has been fixed.
On 25th August the father and the brother of the female doctor met the man and inquired about the progress of the admission process. However, the man did not give clear answers, so they broke the deal. So they decided to approach the Assistant Dean at the hospital and questioned about the admission process.
Assistant Dean then demanded a bribe of rupees 1.5 crores to confirm the admission. When the family members informed that they cannot arrange spo much money, the Assistant Dean allegedly gave a discount and the deal was finalized at rupees 50 lakh. The MBBS doctor alleged that till 30th September they allegedly paid him the whole amount of 50 lakh - almost 20 lacs in cash, the rest via bank transfer.
Even after paying the amount, she could not get admission and she asked the accused to return her money. The assistant Dean assured her that he would return the money but he did not initiate any refund. The doctor then approached Sion police and lodged a complaint against the assistant dean. During the police inquiry, it was found that he had taken Rs 50 lakh from the female doctor, after which the assistant dean was arrested. But he was later admitted to Sion Hospital for hypertension.
Speaking to The Indian Express, the Additional Municipal Commissioner informed that the BMC had approached Mumbai police three months ago to initiate a probe against the assistant dean. They had received a complaint that he was extorting money on the pretext of providing a medical seat to students. When the police could not find any evidence against him, BMC ordered indefinite suspension last month. Internal inquiry is going on and he may have taken money from other students as well.
