Bollywood Actor Sunny Deol Joins BJP
62-year-old filmstar Sunny Deol joined the BJP party and was fielded from the Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency that had previously been held by, the late Vinod Khanna.
62-year-old filmstar Sunny Deol joined the BJP party in Delhi on 23rd April 2019. The actor was welcomed into the party by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Minister of Railways of India Piyush Goyal. He said that, he joined politics because he was very inspired by Narendra Modi. He said he will work hard to make changes for the people of India. Mr Deol said that his father Dharmendra was very close to former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Now he is very honoured to work with PM Modi. He will contest elections from Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency Punjab. This position was earlier held by actor Vinod Khanna.
Sunny Deol, is not the only celebrity to be included in the BJP party. The other celebrities that were included are cricketer Gautam Gambhir, Bhojpuri stars Ravi Kishan and Dinesh Yadav, singer Hansraj Hans, actress Jaya Prada and Bengali actress Locket Chatterjee.Some celebrity candidates have been repeated from 2014. These are actress Hema Malini and Union Minister and musician Babul Supriyo.
Fielding celebrities or well-known candidates helps in cases where the voter enters the polling booth undecided on whom to vote for.Nowadays photographs of candidates appear on EVMs. This gives parties an extra push at the time the voter actually votes.This is why many political parties are inviting celebrities to join, so that they get as many votes as possible.
