In a bizarre incident, a 17 year old boy from Punjab spent Rs 16 lakh on a popular PUBG game. The boy spent money from his parents’ account to buy in-game items like, artillery, passes for tournaments, and virtual ammunition. According to the boy’s parents the money was kept as savings for the boy’s father’s medical expenses. According to a report, the parents were unaware of the situation as the boy told his parents that he was using the smartphone for studying online during the lockdown. Making online transactions was easier for the boy as the bank details and card details were saved on the smartphone only. Most of the in-game transactions were made in one month time. The boy deleted the messages of transactions from their smartphones. He also often shuffled money between two accounts to avoid zeroing down the balance. He also emptied his mother’s provident fund and his own bank account.
The boy’s parents said that they came to know about the transactions after receiving the bank details. The father said, “After we received details from the bank, I found that on many occasions, he shuffled the amount from one bank to another to avoid nil balance. He was using his mother’s phone for some time and she was not very vigilant and did not notice this.” Because of this son’s wrongdoings and to teach a lesson, the father has made him work at a scooter repair shop. The father said, “I cannot let him sit idle at home and cannot give him a mobile phone even for studying. He is working at a scooter repair shop so that he realizes that it is difficult to earn money. I am hopeless now as the money was saved for my son’s future.”PUBG earns money from its in-app purchases where users pay to buy items. The game has faced criticism for its addictive nature mainly in teenagers. Earlier in the month, the app was banned in Pakistan.
