CAPF Sent to Mumbai Due to Rising Cases of COVID-19

Maharashtra government deploys 20 CAPF & CISF teams in Mumbai amidst the rising cases of COVID-19.

Mumbai is one of the worst COVID-19 affected regions in Maharashtra. As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the total number of coronavirus cases in Mumbai on 18th May was 21,152 and the death toll was 757. The Ministry of Home Affairs has a total of 7 Central armed police forces. These are responsible for helping and working with police in states and Union territories to maintain law and order. The Maharashtra government had recently requested the Central Government to send 20 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to Maharashtra.

They were needed to replace the police personnel as the Mumbai police were overburdened due to the lockdown. Last week, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had said that the Maharashtra police have been working "day in and day out" to stop the spread of the virus. Anil Deshmukh in a video message on Twitter said, "The festival of Eid is also coming soon, and proper law and order has to be kept. The police should get some rest for that. Hence, we have requested the Centre to deploy 20 companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) that is 2,000 personnel.” They were posted in several areas of Mumbai from 19th May to assist the local police.

Mumbai Police PRO while speaking to the media said, "Total 5 companies of CISF and CAPF will be deployed in zones 1,3,5,6 and 9 in Mumbai from today.”

Zone 1 - Colaba to Marine Drive

Zone 3 - Tardeo, Nagpada, Worli to NM Joshi Marg

Zone 5 - Dharavi to Dadar

Zone 6 - Chembur to Mankhurd

Zone 9 - Bandra to Amboli (Andheri West)

The BMC has revised the protocol for the sealing of buildings having coronavirus patients.

Earlier the building was sealed and controlled by the BMC. But as per the revised rules, the building, or a floor or a wing after it is sealed, the BMC will hand over the sealed area to office-bearers of the society and explain the precautions to be taken. BMC also advised societies to not give entry to maids, vendors, or service providers.
