Chidambaram’s Bail Plea Denied
The Supreme Court has rejected P Chidambaram’s bail who was arrested by the CBI and the Enforcement directorate in the INX Media scam.
Congress Leader P Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) for corruption in the INX Media case. The CBI accused Mr Chidambaram of misusing his position as Finance Minister. He helped transfer foreign funds in INX Media at the instance of his son Karti Chidambaram.He has spent 15 days in jail.
Chidambaram’s lawyers requested the Supreme Court for bail. His lawyer said the PC should not be sent to Tihar jail, but the SC rejected the requested. The SC said that, when there are economic crimes bails can not be given easily. The SC said that this is a very serious crime and they can not give PC bail. The court said that the CBI and the ED must be given time to properly investigate the case. If PC is given bail it will affect their investigation.
In 2006, Telecommunication companies [Box 05 Aircel and Maxis receive foreign funds of $800 million by giving bribe to officials. The permission for this was supposed to come from a committee headed by the PM but the permission came illegally through the Foreign Minister PC. Officials are investigating this case as well and PC is involved.
