COVID-19 Vaccination Drive to Start From 16th January

Last week, theDCGA granted the final approval to two coronavirus vaccines - Covishield developed by the Oxford University and AstraZeneca and produced in India by the Serum Institute of India and Covaxin on the other hand, has been developed by Bharat Biotech in India. 

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was also attended by Cabinet Secretary, Principal Secretary to PM, Health Secretary to review the status of Covid-19 in the country as well as the preparedness of the states and union territories for vaccination. 

The coronavirus vaccination drive in India will be started on January 16, 2021 and will be first administered to 3 crore healthcare officials and the frontline workers across the country. They will be followed by 27 crore citizens above the age of 50 years and those below the age of 50 years but suffering from co-morbidities.

India has been conducting dry runs before carrying out the actual exercise. Also more than 61,000 programme managers, two lakh vaccinators and 3.7 lakh other vaccination team members have been trained for the vaccination drive.
