A Cyclone is heading towards the state of Odisha with wind speeds of up to 190 km/h. It is expected to reach Odisha by 3rd May 2019. Officials have now shut down operations at two major ports on the east coast of India. Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu states are also on high alert. The cyclone is currently moving up the Bay of Bengal, east of Andhra Pradesh.
The India Meteorological Department has said that Nineteen districts of Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh are likely to be hit by cyclone Fani. They have advised everyone to stay indoors. Once the cyclone reaches north-eastern India, it is expected to move towards Chittagong in Bangladesh.Indian officials say they have set up more than 850 shelters, which are thought to be able to hold almost 10 lakh people. The Navy, the Coast Guard and the National Disaster Response Force have all been prepared for deployment.
81 trains travelling to and from coastal cities have been cancelled.An alert has been sounded in all coastal districts and people living in the coastal areas along with tourists have been asked to leave and go to safer places. Fishermen, who have gone to the mid-sea, have been asked to return immediately.Thousands of rescuers are helping people evacuate low-lying areas.
