Dalit Couple Assaulted by Police in MP

On Tuesday (14th July) a Dalit couple was brutally assaulted of by the police in Guna, Madhya Pradesh. An emotional video went viral on social media which angered everyone. Video showed six young children clinging on to their unconscious parents while crying inconsolably. A Dalit family was asked to evict land that was meant for a college. The family resisted. The Dalit couple Ramkumar Ahirwar aged 38 and his wife Savitri Devi aged 35 claimed that they have leased a piece of land on the outskirts of Guna from for farming from a man named Gabbu Pardhi. Reports said Ramkumar and Savitri requested the police to give them time till harvesting. But still a bulldozer began razing the fields. Seeing this Savitri consumed pesticides. To show protest her husband also did the same. 

According to police when they tried taking the couple to the hospital, Ramkumar's younger brother Shishupal and other relatives blocked their path. So the police were forced to do lathi charge on them. Somehow the couple was rushed to a local hospital and they both are stable. It is also reported that there was an attempt to clear the land in November. But that time it was stopped by Gabbu Pardhi's family. The incident started an argument between Congress and BJP. Congress had lost power in March. They blamed Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Ex-CM Kamal Nath said that this is Jungle raj in MP and suggested that all the issues should be solved legally. Congress said it would send a seven-member team to the area. Some members of Congress met Ramkumar and Savitri at the hospital and handed over a cheque of Rs. 1.5 lakh. Meanwhile state BJP President VD Sharma accused Congress of creating controversy unnecessarily. He also denied any caste angle and added that the dispute was between illegal occupants and authorities. Six police Officers were suspended and District Collector and Superintendent of Police were transferred after the incident.
