On 19 March 2019, Diamond merchant Nirav Modi was arrested by Scotland Yard in London on charges of fraud and money laundering against Punjab National Bank. He was arrested at a London Bank where he was trying to open a bank account.
After spending a night in a police cell, he was presented in court on the 20th of March. In court, he put forward a bail application of Rs 4.5 crore which was rejected since he was considered to be a flight risk. The judge has remanded him in police custody till the 29th of March.
He was then transferred to Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) in south-west London.This is the most crowded jail in U.K. with 1,430 male prisoners.Since the jail is so crowded, he will have to share a cell with more than 1 prisoner. These cells are extremely small and are meant for only one person. The prisoners are hardly allowed to come out of their cells. It is filled with prisoners who have drug and mental health problems.
His arrest has made it easy for the Indian Government to extradite him back to India.
