Dozens Of Turtles Die In Suspected Poisoning At Lake Near Mumbai.
All around the world many animals are becoming extinct due to environmental changes, poaching, etc. The same is the situation with many animals in India. So to protect animals which are endangered and save them from unbecoming extinct, the Indian government has a law known as the Wildlife Protection Act. Under this act the animals are listed which are endangered and which need to be protected. Protection of such animals is then the responsibility of the government.
Indian flapshell turtles are a type of turtle. They are not particularly rare but are a protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act. An incident related to the Indian flapshell turtle occurred at a lake in Kalyan near Mumbai. Let me tell you about it. In a water body in Kalyan near Mumbai, people were getting a foul smell. So a local politician complained to Conservation workers to investigate the foul smell. When the conservation workers reached the spot. They were shocked to see that many flapshell turtles had died. Wildlife experts and conservation workers said that purposely poisoning is possible to blame for the death of dozens of turtles
Suhas Pawar of the Wild Animal and Reptile Rescue conservation group said 57 flapshell turtles had been killed while another six were rescued.
He said, "Restrictions on human activity due to the Covid restrictions likely increased the fish stocks at the lake. These turtles were now growing in numbers by feeding on them, which angered some locals who were illegally breeding fish in the lake to catch them and sell them. Most likely the locals killed the turtles by poisoning them to stop them from eating fish” However it is not sure how the turtles were poisoned. Because if the water is poisoned then, even the fishes will die. So it is not sure how only the turtles were poisoned. Mr. Pawar added, "Everything is being investigated now, a post-mortem and scientific tests will reveal the exact cause of these deaths.”
