Farmers Destroy 1,500 Reliance Mobile Towers in Punjab

Protesting farmers in Punjab have been showing their anger against Reliance by snapping power supply, cutting cables of telecom towers and damaging infrastructure of the firm.

Protesting farmers have been losing patience as thousands wait on the borders of Delhi, demanding that the Central Government scrap the 3 farm laws. But the government is not ready to remove the 3 farm laws. Now more than 1,500 of Reliance Jio's telecom towers in Punjab have stopped working. This is because over the last week, farmers have been showing their anger against Reliance by snapping power supply, cutting cables of telecom towers and damaging infrastructure of the firm owned by Mukesh Ambani. In Jalandhar, some bundles of Jio's fibre cable were burnt. Videos of Jio employees being threatened have been widely circulated.

Farmers believe that reliance is the biggest company that will benefit from the 3 farm laws. The state police had not taken action against the perpetrators so far. Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh issued a stern warning on Monday 28th Dec against vandalisation of mobile towers and disruption of telecom services in the state, and asked the police to take strict action in such cases. He said his government had not objected to, or stopped, peaceful protests in the state. But damage to property and inconvenience to people will not be tolerated. After 5 unsuccessful meetings, now the central government has invited farmers for a fresh round of talks at 2 pm on Wednesday 30th December to resolve the ongoing protests over new agricultural laws.
