Former President Ashraf Ghani May Return to Afghanistan
Ghani made his first appearance by posting a video on his Facebook page and said he is "in talks" to return home.”
Former Afghanistan president Ashraf Ghani had fled the country after the Taliban took over. There have been many allegations that Ghani left Kabul with four cars and a helicopter stuffed with cash before fleeing to the United Arab Emirates. UAE had said that Ghani and his family have been allowed to stay in Dubai on humanitarian grounds.
Ghani made his first appearance since leaving Kabul on Sunday 15 August by posting a video on his facebook page.
In the video Ghani said, “Currently I am staying in the UAE. The first time the Taliban seized Kabul & established their regime in 1996, they dragged former president Mohammed Najibullah from a United Nations office where he had been hiding, and hanged him in a public street after torturing him. I did not want the Afghan people to again see their President hanged in public. I am staying in the UAE for now so that there is no bloodshed and chaos. Also the allegations about me taking cash & money from Afghanistan is completely untrue. I had to leave Afghanistan in such a way that I didn't even get the chance to take my slippers off my feet and pull on my boots. I arrived in the UAE empty handed. Do not believe whoever tells you that your president sold you out and fled for his own advantage and to save his own life. I have no intention of remaining in exile in the UAE and am "in talks" to return home.”
