Various animal welfare groups in Mumbai had petitioned the High Court and said that animals are illegally transported and slaughtered. After reviewing the petition, the Bombay High Court on 6th February 2019 said that on Bakri Eid the killing of goats in private flats and housing societies will now be banned. The High Court said that animal can be killed only at the government-approved slaughterhouses. The high court has said that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from giving permissions for slaughter inside homes.
The court said that public safety and hygiene is very important. Mumbai is very crowded and congested and the flats are very small as well. If animals are killed inside flats, it is not easy to maintain cleanliness and it is not safe either. Fifty eight areas have been designated for killing animals. If anyone wants to kill animals near places of worship like mosques, they have to take permission from the BMC. The court also said that while transporting the goats, everyone must follow the rules. If any of these rules are broken a heavy fine will be imposed.
