Gomathi Wins Gold for India
Even after beginning her athletic career when she was 30, Gomathi Marimuthu made India proud at the 23rd Asian Championship in Doha, where she won the gold medal in the 800m race.
Gomathi Marimuthu took the track seriously at 20. She began her athletic career when she was 30.
Most people leave sports and athletics at this age but Gomathi is among the few who have continued athletics even at 30 years of age. Gomathi brought glory to the country at the 23rd Asian Championship which got over on 24th April in Doha, where she won the gold medal in a 800m race.
Gomathi ran alongside China’s Asian Games champion Wang Chunyu and Kazakhstan’s former two-time Asiad winner Margarita Mukasheva.Bahadur Singh, the Chief National Coach said that Gomathi had run an excellent race.Gomathi winning the gold medal came as a surprise for India. India which came fourth with 17 medals. India had topped the medals table with 12 golds at the 2017 Asian games, but many top athletes did not take part as it was too close to the London Worlds.
At last years Jakarta Asian Games, India had won seven gold medals, but this time, famous athletes like World No. 4 javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, Asiad 800m gold medallist Manjit Singh, hurdler A. Dharun were injured.The Asian games also proved that our athletes are able to raise their performance if they are given good international exposure and this is where the removal of talented high jumper Tejaswin Shankar from the team was a big low point.
