Great Playwright Girish Karnad Passes Away
Girish Karnad a famous actor and playwright has passed away after a prolonged illness.
Born in 1938 Mr. Girish Karnad was an Actor, Film Director & Playwright and worked mainly in the South Indian cinema and Bollywood. He passed away on 10th June from natural causes after a prolonged illness. He has won many awards in his life. He won the Padma Shri in 1974, the Padma Bhushan in 1992 and the Jnanpith Award in 1998 which is the highest honor for literary in India. He also got a Rhodes Scholarship from the Oxford University.
He wrote plays in Kannada that were translated into English and several other Indian languages. His most successful play was called Tughlaq written in 1964 and made his acting debut in 1970 in the movie Samskara which he also wrote. In 1999 he was the voice for former President APJ Abdul Kalam’s audio autobiography; “Wings of Fire”.
While always working in Film and screen writing in the South, he did star in some big Bollywood movies like “ Tiger Zinda Hai” with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn-starrer “Shivaay”. PM Narendra Modi on Twitter offered his condolences to his family, saying his works will continue to be popular in the many years to come and was saddened by his death.
