Has India Banned Firecrackers for Diwali 2021?

With the Festival of Diwali round the corner, people have been contradicting one another on bursting crackers. Several High Courts have come out with directions about the same.

Diwali Festival is coming soon and once again people have started debating whether or not to burst crackers. Deteriorating air quality has already been a major issue for cities like Delhi and Mumbai and the COVID-19 pandemic has made matters worse.

Here's how different states across the country are tackling the issue this Diwali.

  1. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee has imposed a ban on the storage, sale, and use of all firecrackers in the capital city until January 1, 2022. Strict action will be taken on those who break the rules.

  2. The Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered a blanket ban on the sale and use of firecrackers in West Bengal until December 31.

  3. The Haryana State Pollution Control Board directed 14 districts to impose a ban on the sale and use of all firecrackers. However ‘Green Crackers’ which cause less pollution are allowed.

  4. The Punjab government has completely banned firecrackers in Jalandhar and Mandi Gobindgarh on account of poor air quality in those areas. However, it has allowed the bursting of green crackers from 8pm to 10pm on Diwali and Gurpurab.

Odisha, Rajasthan & Bihar have also banned dangerous crackers and allowed only green crackers.
