The weather in Mumbai was very dangerous yesterday (5th Aug). Mumbai was pounded by heavy rains for more than two days. Yesterday afternoon the weather became even more dangerous with strong winds blowing. The speed of the wind up to 107 km. These are the heaviest rainfall Mumbai has seen, since 2005.
Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray, asked the people not to venture outdoors. Photos and messages on Twitter went viral which showed the damage. Roofs were flying off, there were overturned cars on roads and falling trees. Places like Girgaum Chowpatty and Oval Maidan were submerged and many housing societies in these areas were flooded as water entered the premises. The gusty winds destroyed the iconic signage mounted on top of the Bombay Stock Exchange building. Three high capacity cranes deployed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in adjoining Raigad district collapsed due to gusty winds in the afternoon, there was no casualty.
Late in the evening, the Vihar Lake, one of the two lakes that supply water to Mumbai, overflowed. Local trains in Mumbai stopped working. About 200 passengers were stuck inside two trains near Masjid Bunder railway station as heavy rains caused flooding in tracks. Electricity had also gone in some areas of Mumbai.
The Meteorological Department said that heavy rains will continue today as well. The National Disaster Response Force said its teams are on stand-by at Nagpur, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Thane, Kurla and Palghar for prompt response to disasters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and promised all possible support.
