However, there is one house in Delhi that constantly maintains an AQI of 10 -15 regardless of the city’s AQI and even amid severe pollution. But how? Peter Singh and Nino Kaur’s house, located in Sainik Farms in South Delhi, is an eco-friendly house that supports sustainable living, especially amid severe air pollution. The house is surrounded by more than 15,000 plants which create a natural barrier against pollution and clean the indoor air naturally. The house's walls are made of traditional lime mortar instead of cement and covered in lime-based finishes instead of modern lead-based paints. The roof of the house is made of stone tiles which keeps the indoors cool during Delhi's blazing summer season. Apart from its architecture & construction style, the house also functions in an eco-friendly manner! The house is completely powered by solar energy. It does not have any electricity connection which causes the house to have a lesser carbon footprint than others. It has a 15,000-litre underground rainwater harvesting tank which stores & recycles water and rainwater for all human necessities and household chores. Not a single drop of water is wasted. The house’s huge backyard is Peter & Nino’s private organic farm. They grow seasonal vegetables in it and eat them every year. The organic farm is also irrigated by the water collected & stored in the 15,000-litre underground rainwater harvesting tank. After the crops are harvested, Peter & Nino don’t burn the crops residue, which is one of the major contributors to Delhi’s severe pollution, rather they bio-compost it to create fertilizer for growing their indoor mushrooms. When asked what inspired them to create this green haven, the couple revealed their story of a personal crisis. Nino suffered blood cancer some years ago and its treatment & chemotherapy had left her lungs weak & vulnerable. Even the slightest increase in the AQI affected her majorly, making her sick more often than before. One doctor even advised them to leave Delhi, which was proving toxic for Nino but an Ayurvedic specialist urged them to adopt a completely organic lifestyle. Therefore, Peter & Nino decided to transform their house into a pollution-free self-reliant oasis of fresh air and healthy food amid urban pollution. They researched Ayurvedic principles and studied organic living to create their pollution-free, eco-friendly and sustainable green haven of a house that stands unaffected by Delhi’s rising pollution & AQI and is not only the talk of the town but of the whole nation.
