Huge Fire at Ajman Market in UAE
A day after a massive explosion in the Lebanese capital of Beirut, a major fire broke out at Ajman market area in the United Arab Emirates.
A day after a massive explosion in the Lebanese capital of Beirut, a major fire broke out at Ajman market area at around 6.30 pm on Wednesday (5th August) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The fire started at an Iranian souq. The souq is near Ajman Speciality Hospital and a fruit and vegetable market in the city's industrial area. The souq was closed for several months because of Covid-19 safety measures. The hospital was evacuated as a precautionary measure (for safety) as raging (powerful) fire sent thick flames of smoke into the sky. The souq has many traders and is a popular place where visitors from all over UAE come. Workers at the neighboring market said flames quickly engulfed the area.
Rajab Elsawi the owner of Khadem Fresh Meat store opposite to the souq said that he saw a thick blanket of black smoke develop, alerted emergency services, and started to remove road barriers in order to allow fire crew to access the scene. Another worker said that many people tried to put the blaze out with fire extinguishers from their shops but were unable to control the rapidly spreading flames. Ajman Civil Defence said the blaze had been brought under control at about 9pm. Major Gen Sheikh Sultan bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, commander-in-chief of commander-in-chief of Ajman Police said that investigations are going on to determine the cause of the fire. He said 25 police vehicles were rushed to the scene to support civil defense officers. He also added that parts of the market collapsed and were completely burned. Police said that there were no casualties in the fire.
