India Detects 6 Cases of New Covid-19 Strain

The Health Ministry on 29th December said that India has detected six cases of the new starin coronavirus in travellers who recently returned from the UK.

India has detected six cases of the mutant coronavirus that was first discovered in the UK. The Health Ministry on 29th December said the six patients had recently returned from the UK. Three of the patients are in NIMHANS, Bengaluru, two in Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology, Hyderabad and one in National Institute of Virology, Pune. So far 114 have been found positive. These positive samples have been sent to labs for genome sequencing. The health ministry said, “All these persons have been kept in single room isolation in Health Care facilities by respective State Governments. 

Their close contacts have also been put under quarantine. Comprehensive contact tracing has been initiated for co-travellers, family contacts and others. The situation is under careful watch and regular advice is being provided to the States for enhanced surveillance, containment, testing”. The health ministry further added that Between 25th November to 23rd December about 33,000 passengers landed at various Indian airports from the UK. Last week, India announced the suspension of flights to and from the UK till 31st December. Till now the new UK Variant has already been reported by Denmark, Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, France,  Lebanon, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Japan, Singapore and  Australia.
