India Post to Say Goodbye to Registered Post from 1 September 2025

India Post will discontinue its Registered Post service from 1 September 2025, merging it with Speed Post. The decision comes due to falling demand and changing communication trends.

From 1 September 2025, India Post will discontinue its Registered Post service, ending a trusted tradition that has been part of Indian life for decades. Registered Post was known for providing proof of posting, tracking, and legal delivery — often used for court notices, government papers, bank documents, and college forms.

The decision comes due to falling demand and the shift towards faster, digital options like emails, OTPs, and mobile apps. Even government offices and courts are moving to online systems or speedier couriers. India Post will now focus on Speed Post, which offers faster delivery, tracking, proof of delivery, and online updates.

While Speed Post keeps most of the features of Registered Post, it costs more — starting at ?41 for 50g compared to ?26 for Registered Post — raising concerns in rural areas. For many, this is not just about a service ending but about losing a part of history. Social media is already filled with emotional posts and memories, with hashtags like #EndOfAnEra trending as people recall the comfort and trust that Registered Post gave them.
