Indian Athletes Clinch 2 Gold Medals in Tokyo Paralympics
Indian athletes clinched a total of 7 medals in the ongoing paralympics which included 2 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze.
It was raining medals for India at the Tokyo Paralympics on Monday, August 30. In a span of little over an hour, India won as many as five medals, including two gold, two silver and a bronze. This took India’s overall tally to 7 medals in the Tokyo Paralympics.
Avani Lekhara: Avani is a 19-year-old from Jaipur, who sustained spinal cord injuries in a car accident in 2012. She won a historic gold medal in the women's 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 final.She became the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic gold medal in the country's history.
Sumit Antil: Sumit Antil a 23-year-old from Sonepat in Haryana, lost his left leg below the knee after he was involved in a motorbike accident in 2015. Javelin thrower Sumit Antil clinched India's second gold at the ongoing Paralympics in the men's F64 category. Antil was an able-bodied wrestler before his accident which led to the amputation of his leg below the knee. His villagers encouraged him to the sport in 2018.
Bhavina Patel: Bhavinaben Patel is a table tennis player from Mehsana, Gujarat. She plays table tennis in her wheelchair. She won the silver medal in the women's singles table tennis C4 final.
Nishad Kumar: The 21-year-old Nishad, is a farmer's son from Himachal Pradesh. Nishad’s right hand got cut by a grass-cutting machine at his family's farm when he was an eight-year-old boy. He clinched a silver in Men's High Jump T47 category.
Yogesh Kathuniya: Yogesh is 24-year-old, a B.Com graduate. He is the son of an Army man. He suffered a paralytic attack at the age of eight which left him with coordination impairments in his limbs. At the Tokyo Paralympics, Yogesh won the silver medal in the Men's Discus F56 event.
Devendra Jhajharia: The 40-year-old Jhajahria is already India's greatest Paralympian after winning gold medals in the 2004 and 2016 Games. Jhajharia,lost his left hand after accidentally touching an electric wire while climbing a tree at the age of eight. Jhajharia went on to win a silver medal in Men's Javelin F46 event.
Sundar Singh Gurjar : The 25-year-old Gurjar lost his left hand in 2015 after a metal sheet fell on him at his friend's house. Sundar Singh Gurjar also chipped in with a bronze, finishing behind Jhajharia in the men's javelin throw F46 final.
Paralympics like the able bodied athlete have won medals in the olympics / paralympics and have made India proud. Hence the government and the people of the country should encourage and support them equally.
