Indore has declared itself India’s first beggar-free city. A 2024 campaign helped over 5,000 people through jobs, shelter, and education.

Indore, already known as one of the cleanest cities in India, is now aiming for another big title — India’s first beggar-free city. This achievement didn’t happen in one day. It is the result of months of hard work, planning, and compassion.
In February 2024, the Indore District Administration started a special campaign to remove begging from the streets. But instead of punishing beggars, the goal was to help them. The mission was to give them a better life, not just to clear the streets.
The idea began when officials noticed many men, women, and children begging at traffic signals, temples, and markets. They understood that simply removing beggars would not help. So, they partnered with social workers, NGOs, police, and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to make a proper plan.
As part of the campaign, around 5,000 beggars were identified and supported — including 500 children. The adults were trained in skills like tailoring, cooking, or helping in shops. Some were given jobs and some were reunited with their families. Children were enrolled in schools to secure their future.
To support this mission, the city also brought a new rule: people should not give money to beggars. Instead, they were asked to call a special helpline number if they saw someone begging. Those who informed the helpline were rewarded, and strict action was taken against those who kept begging or gave money on the streets.
Officials say that now, public places in Indore are free from beggars. But some reports say a few are still seen here and there, which shows that constant support and monitoring are still needed.
Even so, the effort has been praised by the World Bank and the Union Government. Many believe Indore can become a model for other cities in India to follow.
This is not just about making the city cleaner. It’s about giving people dignity, opportunity, and a second chance at life.
