A team of municipal workers in Madhya Pradesh's Indore were caught on video trying to dump elderly homeless people by the side of a highway on the city's outskirts in freezing cold temperature. However, they were forced to bring the elderly people back after protests by villagers in the Kshipra area. The disturbing visuals of the incident have gone viral on social media and show the municipal team trying to unload homeless people off a truck parked by the side of the highway. In one of the videos, a man can be heard explaining how the municipal team brought the homeless people in a truck and abandoned them by the side of the road. Another video shows the municipal team bringing the homeless people back on the same truck after locals protested.
Abhay Rajangaonkar, the Additional Commissioner of Indore Municipal Corporation claimed that the municipal employees were taking the homeless people to a night shelter and has denied allegations that they had been dropped on the outskirts of the city. Congress spokesperson Narendra Saluja attacked the state government and said “In the name of cleanliness, the officials of the Indore Municipal Corporation left the elderly in the cold. Now what should the poor officials do, they are working according to the ideology of the BJP? As the BJP left many elderly leaders like Advaniji, Joshiji, Yashwant Sinha.” Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has ordered a probe into the matter. He said, “I got information about the inhuman treatment of old people by Municipal Corporation employees in Indore. Two employees, including the Deputy Commissioner, who are responsible have been suspended. The District Collector has been instructed to take proper care of the elderly. Inhuman treatment towards the elderly will not be tolerated. Every aged person should get respect and love. This is our culture”.
The chief minister suspended IMC deputy commissioner Pratap Singh Solanki and two contractual employees. A resident of Damodar Nagar, Pushpa Salvi, found her missing 55-year-old mentally unstable husband on Sunday after a municipal officer called her. She said, “My husband went missing on 3rd January. I searched for him a lot but didn’t find him. I lodged a complaint with police on 15th January but police also failed to locate him. On 30th January I got a call from an officer of IMC (Indore Municipal Corporation). He told me that he was at Nipaniya’s by-pass. She said that when she reached there she found about six people including her husband sitting on the ground. “The IMC officials at the site allowed me to take my husband with me. I took him to a hospital for a health check-up.” She added, “If the villagers had not opposed the act of IMC officials of dumping elderly homeless people, I might have lost my husband for forever. IMC officials tried to locate the family members of these people including my husband after chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took action against them.
